Our Ref: P26/19

To: All Branches

Dear Colleagues,

CWU Mental Health Strategy – Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Instructor Course

Further to LTBs 516/18 and 396/19‎, the Mental Health Strategy Group, set up by the NEC continues to develop the Union’s Mental Health strategy in line with Conference Policy.

A major CWU Mental Health National Event has been organised with the details published in LTB 369/19.

Another important strand of the Strategy Group’s work, in line with Conference Policy is to establish a National MHFA Training Programme‎. The Strategy Group‎ has approached this in two ways; firstly in discussions with TUC Unionlearn, setting up courses across the country’s regions in the short term and in the longer term, training our own CWU MHFA trainers. We will also continue to run our own Mental Health Awareness course, which is aimed at developing a trade union approach to mental health in the workplace.

Initially we will be seeking to train one MHFA instructor per region with a couple for cover.

The course will run in three residential sections.

Part 1: 21st – 23rd October 2019

Part 2: 7th – 8th November 2019

Part 3: 21st – 22nd November 2019

Mental Health First Aid is a proprietary branded course and the instructors’ course will cost over £30,000 to run. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY TO TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOU WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL DATES.

Please be aware that in order to be accepted on the course applicants have to meet both the criteria of the CWU and those of Mental Health First Aid. Because of the two-tier application process, please note that timescales are tight.

If you would like to apply please complete the attached application form. Completed application forms MUST be counter-signed by your Branch Secretary and sent to CWU Equalities, Training & Development, 150 The Broadway, Wimbledon SW19 1RX or learn@cwu.org.

Closing date for applications is 22nd July 2019.

If you are short-listed by the CWU you will be given a link to MHFA’s online application, which will need to be completed by 26th August 2019.

Any enquiries on the above LTB should be addressed to pdovey@cwu.org.

Yours sincerely

Dave Joyce
