Chester Pride; A Learning Success

The CWU were out in force last weekend as Pride came to Chester with  dozens of CWU activists and reps enjoying an amazing day.

The precursor to this was the inaugural  LGBT+ & Allies Networking Event which was an opportunity for some genuine learning, led by our friends at Journey to Justice in Martin and Patricia. Their session focused on and highlighted some of the lesser known heroes and heroines of LGBT+ history with the spotlight turned on the stories around Bayard Rustin and Pauli Murray, two very significant players in the American Civil Rights movement who were both LGBT+ at a time where it was really difficult to be open with sexual orientation of this nature. The J to J team went on to feature LGSM (Lesbian & Gay Support the Miners) in a fitting end to their session. They were followed by Trans activist and Scottish Regional LGBT+ Regional Lead for Scotland Roz White, who gave a very personal insight into her own journey and then touched on the various books she has authored, such as ‘The Sisterhood’.

It was encouraging to see new faces coming to the networking event and even more positive was the fact they all seemed to be thoroughly enthused by the learning on offer – this was followed by a brilliant day at Chester Pride. Our thanks to Ruth Meadows for her help leading up to and on the day of Pride.
