CWU Make An Impact At TUC LGBT+ Conference
June 26 2026
The CWU delegation made a real impact at the TUC LGBT+ Conference. The conference opened with Maria Exall, CWU National LGBT+ Lead and member of the TUC Executive, chairing the morning session. In her powerful opening speech, Maria spoke about the rise in hate, reminding conference of the importance of solidarity and inclusivity, particularly for our trans siblings, and highlighting the continued failures of governments to properly protect and support the LGBT+ community.
The CWU was then proudly represented by Moira Cahill from the UTAW Branch, who moved the CWU composite motion on tackling hate, promoting allyship and solidarity. Her passionate speech received four rounds of applause, and the motion was carried unanimously. Moira also made a powerful contribution to Composite 2 – Ending LGBT+ Workplace Bullying and Harassment, reinforcing the need for safe, inclusive workplaces for all.
On day two, Maria moved Emergency Motion 1 on the new EHRC guidance issued in May following the Supreme Court judgment. Maria spoke passionately about the real impact this guidance is already having on people’s lives and highlighted the division and exclusion it has exacerbated across society and in our workplaces.
Moira Cahill delivered an incredibly emotional and powerful speech on trans healthcare, exposing the shocking lack of facilities and provision available for trans people, with some facing waiting times of up to 50 years for services. Her contribution received a heartfelt response from conference.
Pete Thompson also made an excellent contribution, speaking in support of the decriminalisation of LGBT+ sex workers and reinforcing the importance of dignity, safety and human rights for all.
Maria later chaired the final session of conference, while Moira proudly seconded the vote of thanks.
We are also delighted to announce that CWU Emergency Composite Motion 1 has been selected and will now go forward to TUC Congress this September.
The CWU was prominent throughout the last 2 days, leading debates, shaping policy and standing up for equality, inclusion and justice.
CWU and Proud!
