CWU ‘Moment of Resistance’ at TUC Disability Conference
June 6 2025The TUC Disability Conference concluded on the 4th June, with the CWU being very prominent throughout the two days. Part of the agenda saw three Moment of Resistance case studies presented to the Conference and CWU were invited to deliver the first of the three. It was an opportunity for the department to showcase the Equality Act in the Workplace workshop. Conference was receptive to the case study which essentially described how we train CWU reps to deconstruct the Equality Act, with a specific lens on disability issues.
A number of delegates from CWU spoke on debates, touching on various themes such as Neurodiversity, Reasonable Adjustments, 30 years of Disability Rights and much more. The CWU motion on welfare attacks was also unanimously carried.
Overall, the conference was a success. Kate Hudson, Head of Equality, Education and Development added “There were some really excellent debates, and it is always heartening for us to see our union playing a prominent role at such an important conference, which helps to shape the policy of the TUC.”
One of the other highlights was our CWU NEC Disability Lead Mark Anthony’s question to the DWP Minister Sir Stephen Timms, which drew the biggest applause of the Conference when he asked Sir Stephen “Why isn’t the Government going after the super-rich tax evaders instead of those most vulnerable in society?”
