Learning Becomes a Force in Coventry

Education

The CWU have been involved in very successful joint working with the TUC-WMCA Skills Partnership to bring skills and opportunities to workers in Coventry.

Lead ULR Dean Quibell invited the Partnership in after many of his members approached him asking for opportunities to further their skills. Accompanied by partners from the National Careers Service and Coventry City Council Adult Education Service, the Partnership set up stall on the shop floor, talking about skills and opportunities. The response was overwhelming with dozens of workers signing-up to engage in skills.

Vernice Jeffers from the National Careers Service commented, “I had a fantastic day at the National Parcelforce Depot in Coventry. I met a variety of employees who were interested in updating their skills. Some were asking about CVs and interview techniques. It was worthwhile attending.”

Andy Galsworthy from Coventry City Council Adult Education Service added, “It was nice to meet people who would like to upskill their skills to open up doors to new experiences.”

The day was so successful that the Partnership returned a week later to talk to staff on the night shifts.
They were also invited into the adjacent International Hub. Another learning day included an advisor from First Actuarial who came along as many workers had expressed confusion at understanding their pension schemes.

As before, the event was well attended and appreciated by Parcelforce employees. Louise Collins, one worker at the International Hub remarked, “I was so worried and confused about my pension until this amazing lady explained it all to me. I feel so much happier and in control about the future.”

That “amazing lady” was Catherine Lockyer who told us, “It has been absolutely fantastic to meet so many Royal Mail colleagues who were so eager to know a bit more about their pensions. Some didn’t know what they wanted to ask but it was very valuable to spend time explaining. I think it was a really important and worthwhile day.”

Summing up, Dean Quibell, the instigating force behind all the learning taking place, said, “A fantastic learning day at Parcelforce with Matt. Matt is a great believer in adult education and a fantastic motivator for all of us.”
