LGBT+ Networking Event & Birmingham Pride 2025
May 28 2025On May 23rd and 24th, 2025, the CWU’s Equality and Education Department hosted its 2nd LGBT+ and Allies National Networking Event in Birmingham, supported by the Midlands Region. The event coincided with Birmingham Pride, encouraging attendees to celebrate the diversity and visibility of the LGBT+ community.
Mark Harper, CWU Midlands Regional Secretary, opened the event, welcoming attendees and highlighting the significance of Birmingham Pride. The event featured a presentation by Maria Exall, CWU LGBT+ National Lead, who emphasized the historical and political importance of Pride. Maria discussed the origins of LGBT+ Pride in the 1970s and the crucial role of trade unions in supporting LGBT+ rights.
The event also addressed the increasing commercialisation of Pride and the banning of MPs from attending, sparking a debate among attendees. Many felt that corporate sponsorships, while helpful in funding events, diluted the political message of Pride.
Sarah Miguel from the LGBT Foundation presented the second session, celebrating the foundation’s 50th anniversary and calling for better healthcare access for LGBT+ people. She highlighted the need for more data on healthcare and the expansion of LGBT+ specialist services.
An interactive activity debunking myths about trans rights followed, encouraging attendees to critically examine common misconceptions. The final session featured Labour MP Rachel Taylor, who shared her personal experiences and Labour’s plans to support LGBT+ rights, including ending conversion therapy and addressing HIV.
Kate Hudson, Head of CWU Equality, Education & Development, closed the event by emphasising the importance of unity and resistance against division and hate. The event concluded with a call to action for CWU attendees to join Birmingham Pride and stand proud in support of the LGBT+ community.
