Linking the Issues in the North East
August 3 2026
This event came about when the leads for Equality Sub Committee and the ULR Sub Committee in the North East came together to discuss how we could maximise participation. Often both meetings have suffered from low attendance, but we thought if we joined up, advertised it to the Region and opened it to all reps we could invite speakers without the worry of it being poorly attended. It would showcase what the non industrial strands did and could encourage reps to put themselves forward to become a ULR or Equality rep.
Our first speaker, Matt Gupwell, delivered an informative session on Neurodiversity, the key message was not to get bogged down in trying to understand each condition, but to look at the person and how it effects their day to day life and how they cope / react to their condition.
Cancer Champion Emma covered nine of the most common cancers and the signs and symptoms to look out for.
Simon delivered a very personal presentation about how the menopause affected not only his wife but himself and the journey they went through together.
And finally was Tim, who is a volunteer for Dementia Friendly explained the issues faced by people dealing with dementia and how it effects their everyday life.
