Mount Pleasant 5-a-side CHESS Challenge

5-a-side CHESS has been impacting since its establishment in 2015 by co-founders Ross Smith and Ian McKay. Recognising the need to address disconnection and inequality in our society, they developed this initiative to foster connection and community. The mental health benefits of chess are well-documented. Chess therapy dates to a Baghdad hospital in the 9th century. This timeless game can aid individuals facing challenges such as ADHD and dementia while teaching valuable life skills through its strategic nature.

Today, we celebrated the launch of the Mount Pleasant Mail Centre 5-a-side CHESS Challenge in the staff canteen. Participants enthusiastically engaged with the chess puzzles, providing positive feedback on how the activity helped enhance their concentration and mental well-being.

Over the next 30 days, we encourage everyone to join this enriching challenge. Those who complete four chess puzzles will have their names entered into a drawing for exciting prizes—1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th—drawn by a respected team member.

Many participants have already enjoyed the experience, appreciating the opportunity for distraction and the surprising speed at which time flew by.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated 5-a-side CHESS team, particularly Diane and Ross, for their outstanding support and effort in making this initiative possible. Together, let’s embrace chess as a connection and personal growth tool!
