The Postal Museum Visits Aberdeen Mail Centre

CWU Grampian and Shetland recently welcomed representatives from The Postal Museum to Aberdeen Mail Centre as part of an initiative to celebrate and preserve the rich history of postal workers and the postal service.

Over the week, colleagues across different shifts, including the night operation, had the opportunity to explore a fascinating collection of postal artefacts, uniforms, badges, photographs, publications and memorabilia.

The displays generated a great deal of interest, with many employees taking time during their breaks to browse the exhibits, share memories and discuss how working practices, technology and the job itself have changed over the decades.

The visits highlighted the important role postal workers have played in communities across the UK and gave current employees an opportunity to connect with the history and heritage of the industry.

Andrea Dumbrell from The Postal Museum enjoyed hearing colleagues’ memories and learning about their experiences as postal workers during the Aberdeen visit.

CWU Grampian and Shetland also used the events to engage with members, promote the benefits of union membership and showcase the work being carried out by the branch on behalf of postal workers across the area.

Peter Knox, Regional ULR Lead for Scotland, said:

“It’s fantastic to see The Postal Museum visiting Aberdeen Mail Centre and working with CWU Grampian and Shetland to bring our postal heritage into the workplace.

“These visits give colleagues the chance to share their memories, learn more about the history of their industry and recognise their own place in that story. Preserving the experiences of postal workers is just as important as preserving the uniforms and equipment.

“I hope we can build on this and bring similar opportunities to more workplaces across Scotland.”
